Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is designed to study the effect of ethanol stem extract of costus afer on female albino rats after 15 days of treatment. The animals were divided into 3 groups of six (6 ) animals each and each of the group received standard feed and water. Group 1 served as the control, while Group 2 served as the low dose and was administered 400mg/kg.Bw of the stem extract and group 3 served as the high dose and was also administered 800mg/kg.BW of the stem extract. The animals weight were monitored daily and it was observed that there was an increase in the body weight of each of the animals in the test gropus. The effect of costus afer on the liver biomarkers, Alkaline phosphatase, Lipid biomarkers, such as Triacylglycerol,Total cholesterol, and renal biomarkers such as creatinine, urea, sodium, and chlorine were investigated. Results showed that in the liver function test, ALP showed a significant increase ( p 0.05) when compared to the control at day 5 and only TC and HDL showed a significant increase at both high and low dose in day 15.
