ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF MICRORGANISM RESPONSIBLE FOR DRY ROT IN YAM (DISCOREA ALATA)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to identify microorganism responsible for rot of yam. Fungal organism occurred consistently associated with dry rot Fusarium species, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The results on disease incidence and severity showed that there existed a high rate of post harvest rot of D. rotundata tuber obtained from Umuikaa market, in Isialangwa, Abia State, with dry rot having the percentage value of disease incidence (67.5%,) and severity (26.8%, ). In conclusion pathogenicity was proved for all the fungal pathogens associated with postharvest fungal decay of the yam cultivar in storage and a host of factors pre disposes them to such. This can cause large scale economic losses to farmers and households and thus a major threat to food availability and security in Nigeria and the world at large.
