THE INFLUENCE OF TIKTOK ON THE LIFESTYLE OF THE UNDERGRADUATES IN KWARA STATE UNIVERSITY
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examined the influence of TikTok on the lifestyle of undergraduate students at Kwara
State University (KWASU), focusing on its effects on social interaction, mental well-being,
academic performance, and cultural values. Guided by the Uses and Gratifications theory, the
research adopted a quantitative design using a survey method. Data were collected from 400
students through structured questionnaires and analysed using the Statistical Package for Social
Sciences (SPSS). The findings revealed that TikTok was widely used among KWASU students,
with many engaging with the platform daily. It significantly influenced their lifestyle,
particularly in fashion trends, language use, time management, and daily routines. TikTok also
enhanced social bonding and self-expression, allowing users to connect with peers and
participate in content creation. Although the platform exposed students to diverse global cultures,
most respondents did not view this as conflicting with their cultural or traditional values,
suggesting selective content engagement. Despite concerns about the adverse effects of social
media, the study found that most students did not associate TikTok use with anxiety, stress, or
other mental health challenges. However, the platform was perceived to have a distracting effect
on academic performance, with little contribution to learning outcomes. Based on the findings,
the study recommended the introduction of media literacy programmes, culturally informed
digital engagement, institutional regulation of device use, and the promotion of educational
content on TikTok. It also suggested strengthening mental health support services on campus.
The study was limited to KWASU and employed only a quantitative approach. Future research
should consider using mixed methods, expanding to multiple universities, and exploring
TikTok’s role in political awareness and activism among Nigerian youth.
