Abstract

This study explores the potential of sawn duct ash, a steel industry by-product, as a primary material in geopolymer production. The physical and chemical properties of sawn duct ash were characterized, and its suitability for geopolymer production was evaluated. The effects of different aggregates on the mechanical and durability properties of sawn duct ash-based geopolymer were examined, and the optimal mix design was determined. The results showed improved compressive strength, workability, and durability with the addition of aggregates. The optimal mix design consisted of 70% sawn duct ash, 30% aggregate, and 10% alkaline activator. Durability tests revealed excellent resistance to water, acid, and alkali exposure. Potential applications in construction and infrastructure development were identified, including sustainable concrete, mortar, and decorative products. This study demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing sawn duct ash in geopolymer production, promoting a circular economy and reducing waste in the steel industry.
