A PRAGMATIC ANALYSIS OF PRESUPPOSITION IN SOME SELECTED WHATSAPP CHATS IN 2024
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the use of presupposition as a pragmatic tool in communication, focusing on selected WhatsApp chats from 2024. It examines how interlocutors employ presuppositions to convey implicit meanings, maintain conversational flow, and establish shared knowledge. The research adopts the qualitative method of analysis as well as the purposive sampling technique of data collection. The study identifies the types of presuppositions used, such as existential, lexical, structural, and factive presuppositions, and explores their functions in digital communication. Findings reveal that presuppositions enhance coherence, minimize explicitness, and reflect the socio-cultural context of the interlocutors. This research highlights the importance of presupposition in understanding digital communication patterns and contributes to the broader field of pragmatics in computer-mediated discourse.
