FAMILY BACKGROUND AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS IN KADUNA SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT OF KADUNA STATE
Abstract
This study investigates the influence of family background on the academic performance of primary school pupils in Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The research focuses on key family-related factors such as parental education, occupation, income level, and home environment, and how these variables affect pupils’ learning outcomes. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with data collected from selected primary schools through questionnaires and interviews. The findings reveal that pupils from families with higher educational attainment, stable income, and supportive home environments tend to perform better academically compared to those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The study also highlights challenges such as inadequate parental involvement, financial constraints, and unstable family structures, which negatively impact pupils’ performance. Recommendations include strengthening parental engagement in children’s education, improving socio-economic support for low-income families, and integrating family-focused policies into educational planning to enhance learning outcomes in primary schools.
