Abstract

ABSTRACT The study assesses students’ academic performance and attitude toward Redox Reaction Concept among secondary school students in Katsina metropolis. Two objectives guided the study and these are to objectives to assess the level of academic performance of senior secondary school students in Redox Reaction Concepts among Public Senior Secondary School Students in Katsina Metropolis and to identify the relationship between students attitude toward redox reaction concepts and academic performance among Public Senior Secondary School Students in Katsina Metropolis. Two research questions and hypotheses further guided the study. The study was descriptive survey research design. The population of the study covers a total number of 851 SSII chemistry students. The sample of this study covered a total number of 265 SSS II students from two schools. Two validated instrument with reliability coefficient of 0.8 and 0.7 namely attitude questionnaire and performance test guided data collection. Two research questions raised were answered using mean and standard deviations while hypothesis was tested using independent t-test at 0.05 level of significance by means of SPSS version 23.1 and the hypothesis was accepted. From the findings, There is no significant level of academic performance of senior secondary school students in Redox Reaction Concepts among Public Senior Secondary School Students in Katsina Metropolis. Students’ attitude affects their academic performance in redox reaction concepts among Senior Secondary School in Katsina Metropolis. On the basis of the study findings, the following recommendations are made: The Katsina State Government should emphasize the training of chemistry teachers on the use of learner centered and activity based instructional strategies like peer-tutoring technique for instructions through periodic seminars, conferences and workshop, Chemistry teachers in secondary school of Katsina State should adopt the strategy in teaching Redox Reaction Concepts. And Katsina state school managers, teachers, curriculum planners and quality assurance officers of the Ministry of Education should consider and promote the integration of modern teaching technique into chemistry studies.
