THE IMPACT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ON THE ROLE OF A MODERN SECRETARY. CASE STUDY: A CASE STUDY OF THREE ORGANISATIONS IN KWARA STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
Abstract
The rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are profoundly reshaping various professional domains, including the long-standing role of the modern secretary. This paper investigates the multifaceted impact of AI technologies, such as automation, natural language processing, and predictive analytics, on the responsibilities, required competencies, and overall strategic value of administrative professionals. Traditionally defined by a blend of routine administrative and complex organizational tasks, the secretarial role is experiencing a significant paradigm shift. AI tools are increasingly capable of handling repetitive functions like scheduling, data entry, email management, and document drafting, thereby freeing secretaries from transactional duties. This transformation presents both substantial opportunities and critical challenges. Opportunities include the ability for secretaries to transition into more strategic, analytical, and managerial capacities, focusing on high-value activities such as project coordination, stakeholder engagement, and proactive problem-solving. However, it also necessitates the urgent acquisition of new skills, including digital literacy, data interpretation, AI tool proficiency, and enhanced emotional intelligence and critical thinking. The paper concludes that while AI may reduce the demand for purely administrative tasks, it elevates the secretary's potential to become an indispensable strategic partner, provided that individuals and organizations invest in continuous learning and adaptive strategies. This evolution demands a redefinition of the secretarial profile, emphasizing human-centric skills alongside technological acumen for future success.
