Abstract

There is an increase in the global prevalence of diabetes mellitus, especially type 2 DM, resulting in a higher prevalence of diabetic complications. Persistent hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus induces systemic oxidative stress. Oxidative stress disrupts Nissil substances and causes apoptosis of the male cerebral cells system. Propolis contains active substances which have antioxidant and antidiabetic properties. This study aimed to investigate the potential protective role of Propolis on morphological and morphometric alterations in cerebral tissue by induced fructose-streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Thirty-five adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups (n=7): positive control; negative control; diabetic + AP 400mg/kg; diabetic + metformin (SD) 500mg/kg; diabetic + AP 400mg/kg + SD 500mg/kg. Diabetes was induced by first feeding the rat with fructose 120mg/kg for 4 weeks before inducing streptozotocin 110mg/kg intraperitoneally.
