A RESEARCH TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF THE CONTENT OF PSYCHOACTIVE SUBSTANCES CONSUMED BY YOUTHS IN LAGOS, NIGERIA
Abstract
his research aims to evaluate the effects of these substances,
focusing on their content, prevalence, and impact on the physical, mental, and social well-being of
the youth population. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative
analysis of substance content through laboratory testing with qualitative data gathered from
interviews and focus groups with affected youths, healthcare professionals, and law enforcement
officers.
The quantitative component of the research involves sampling commonly consumed substances,
such as marijuana, tramadol, codeine, and synthetic drugs, to identify the specific psychoactive
components and their concentrations. These findings will be compared against global
benchmarks to determine the potential risks associated with these substances. The qualitative
aspect delves into the lived experiences of youths, exploring the reasons behind substance use,
the social and economic factors driving this behavior, and the perceived and actual effects on
their health and daily lives.
