QUALITATIVE PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND ANTI INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY OF THE TOTAL FLAVONOIDS OF THE HYDRO-ALCOHOLICEXTRACTOFBUCHHOLZIA CORIACEAE(CAPPARACEAE)

Abstract

Medicinal plants has been known to serve a multitude of purposes in healthcare which includes treatments of ailments. Buccholzia coriaceae, known as “Uwuro” or "Wonderful Kola," is traditionally valued for its potential health benefits that includes treating arthritis, general body pain and swelling. The objective of this study is to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of the total flavonoids of the hydro-alcoholic extract of fruits of Buccholzia coriaceae. The phytochemical screening was performed according to standard conventional methods. The extraction of total flavonoid method was done following the method of Shukla. For the in-vitro anti-inflammatory studies, the method of Sangita was adopted which involves egg-albumin denaturation and measuring the absorbance at 660nm. The phytochemical screening indicated the presence of saponins, flavonoids, steroids, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, anthraquinone. The percentage yield of the total flavonoids of the hydro alcoholic extract of Buccholzia coriaceae was 5.4%. The values of percentage inhibitions obtained from the in-vitro studies for extract concentrations(2000,1000,500,250,125 ug/ml) was 5.7,40,45.5,51.38,63.34 for the absorbance (0.832,0.529,0.399,0.516,0.385) respectively. The standard drug used was diclofenac and water was used as a negative control. From the results of the work, the total flavonoids of the hydro-alcoholic extract of Buccholzia coriaceae elicited marked anti-inflammatory activities .These observed activities may be attribute to the presence of the detected phytochemical constituents but principally to the total flavonoids investigated.
