SURVEY ON THE DISEASE ASSOCIATED WITH CATFISH SPECIE IN SELECTED CATFISH POND IN MAIDUGURI, BORNO STATE NIGERIA
Abstract
This study investigated the prevalence and characterization of diseases associated
with catfish species in selected catfish ponds in Maiduguri, Borno State. A total of
eight fish samples were collected from two ponds (Animal House, University of
Maiduguri, and Royal Farm, Abuja sharaton) and examined for bacteria and
parasitic infections. The results showed a high prevalence rate of 62.5% with five
out of eight fish samples infected with parasitic diseases, specifically nematodes
(Ascaris lumbricoides) and trematodes (haematobium). The study highlights the
need for improved management practices, including regular monitoring and
maintenance of water quality parameters, proper cleaning and disinfection of
equipment, and quarantine for new stock to mitigate the spread of infections. The
findings of this study have significant implications for the management of diseases
in catfish aquaculture in Maiduguri, Borno State.
