EFFECT OF PLANT SPACING AND NUMBER OF SEEDS PER HOLE ON THE PERFORMANCE OF GROUNDNUT IN BORNO STATE
Abstract
Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a significant oilseed crop worldwide, contributing substantially to the agricultural economy, particularly in developing countries. Despite its importance, groundnut yields in regions like Africa remain low compared to global potentials due to factors like inadequate plant spacing, poor soil fertility, and inappropriate crop management practices. This study aimed to investigate the effect of planting spacing and the number of seeds per hole on the performance of groundnut in Maiduguri, Nigeria. The research sought to determine the optimal planting spacing, the ideal number of seeds per hole, and their interactions on groundnut growth. The study was conducted at the University of Maiduguri Botanical Garden using a randomized complete block design (RCBD), with treatments involving two spacings (40cm x 40cm, 60cm x 60cm) and a factorial arrangement of three seed treatments. Data on plant height, number of branches, leaves, and pods were collected and analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The findings aim to provide valuable insights for optimizing groundnut cultivation practices, helping to bridge the yield gap and improve productivity for smallholder farmers in Borno State and similar agro-ecological zones. By identifying effective spacing and seeding methods, this study hopes to contribute to sustainable agricultural practices and improved groundnut yield, enhancing food security and economic growth.
