IMPACT OF DIGITAL LITERACY SKILLS ON THE USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR INNOVATION BY ENGINEERING STUDENTS IN UNIVERSITY OF MAIDUGURI
Abstract
This study explores the impact of digital literacy skills on the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for innovation among engineering students at the University of Maiduguri. The objectives of the study examines the level of digital literacy skills possessed by the students, evaluate their use of AI technologies for innovation, and identify the types of innovations developed, the research questions were in line with the research objectives. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, with a sample size of 122 engineering students determined using Krejcie and Morgan's formula. Data were collected via a self-designed, validated questionnaire with reliability confirmed through Cronbach’s Alpha. Analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, including frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. The findings reveal that student’s exhibit moderate to high digital literacy, particularly in accessing and evaluating online resources, but significant gaps persist in programming skills and advanced AI applications. AI technologies such as simulation tools and optimization models are moderately utilized, while innovations focus largely on hardware prototyping and process optimization, with limited involvement in software solutions and AI integration. This study highlights the need for curriculum improvements and specialized training programs to bridge identified gaps in digital literacy and AI adoption. The researchers recommended that the department of engineering should incorporate more comprehensive programming courses and practical training such as both foundational and advanced programming languages that align with current industry standards that can strengthen students programming skills and bridge the proficiency gap, the department should provide students with access to cutting-edge AI tools and resources, along with training in advanced AI techniques for automation and data-driven decision-making and lastly, the department should place greater emphasis on these areas through dedicated courses, hackathons, and interdisciplinary projects that encourage students to develop mobile applications, software solutions, and AI-driven systems.
