THE CHALLENGES OF ELECTORAL INTEGRITY IN CONFLICT-AFFECTED AREAS: A CASE STUDY OF MAFONI WARD, MAIDUGURI, BORNO STATE

This study examines the challenges of electoral integrity in conflict-affected areas with a focus on Mafoni Area, Maiduguri, Borno State. Electoral integrity is a critical element for the sustenance of democracy, yet in conflict-prone environments such as Borno State, it faces severe threats from insecurity, displacement, voter apathy, and electoral malpractice. The research adopted a quantitative approach, utilizing questionnaires and interviews administered to a sample size of 150 respondents. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts and percentages. Findings reveal that insecurity caused by insurgency significantly undermines voter participation, as many citizens are either displaced or fearful of election-related violence. The study also shows that trust in electoral institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is relatively low, owing to perceptions of electoral malpractice and political interference. Furthermore, the role of security forces during elections was found to be inadequate in ensuring a safe environment for voters. The study concludes that electoral integrity in Mafoni Area, and by extension other conflict-affected regions, is compromised by both structural and conflict-related challenges. It recommends improved security presence during elections, transparent electoral processes, increased voter education, and stronger legal frameworks to address electoral malpractice.
