RECORD LABEL OWNERSHIP AND MUSIC DISTRIBUTION IN THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study examines record label ownership and music distribution in the Nigerian music industry, focusing on their roles, challenges, and impact on growth and sustainability. The objectives include analyzing the roles of record label ownership in industry development, exploring the relationship between ownership and distribution channels, assessing financial management and profitability, and identifying challenges in music distribution. A descriptive survey research design was employed, with data collected through structured interviews involving two record label owners: Kenny Ogungbe of Kennis Music and Emmanuel Nwakwo of Timeless Vibe Records. The findings reveal that record labels play a pivotal role in talent discovery, artist development, and global exposure, while also influencing digital and traditional distribution channels. Financial management is structured through royalties and investments, though challenges such as piracy, contract breaches, and weak copyright enforcement persist. The study concludes that record labels are essential for the industry's growth but require stronger regulatory frameworks to address existing challenges. Recommendations include stricter copyright enforcement, artist education on contracts, infrastructure investment, and the establishment of a dedicated regulatory body to oversee the industry. These measures aim to enhance sustainability and global competitiveness in the Nigerian music sector.
