EFFECT OF LUMBAR OSCILLATORY ROTATION WITH AND WITHOUT LUMBAR STABILIZATION EXERCISES ON PAIN INTENSITY AND RANGE OF MOTION OF PATIENT WITH NON-SPECIFIC CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN
Abstract
Background: Non-specific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP) is described as low back pain with no clear attributable origin or cause. Some of the some of the treatments of NSCLBP are manual therapy techniques such as Lumbar Oscillatory Rotation (LOR) and therapeutic exercises such as Lumbar Stabilization Exercises (LSE).
Objective: This study assessed and compared the effectiveness of LOR and LOR combined with LSE on pain intensity and range of motion.
Methods: Ethical approval for this study was obtained from the Ethics and Health research committee of the University of Medical sciences, Ondo, Ondo State before commencement of this study. This QUASI-experimental study involved 19 patients with NSCLBP. Participants were recruited purposively from Out-patient Physiotherapy Clinic of UNIMEDTH. Participants who gave their consents were randomly assigned into one of two treatment groups. Group A (10 Participant) received Lumbar Oscillatory Rotation followed by Lumbar Stabilization Exercises, that is combination of LOR and LSE as treatment intervention while Group B (9 Participant) received Lumbar Oscillatory Rotation alone as treatment intervention. Treatment effects were assessed in terms of pain intensity and range of motion using Quadrupled Visual Analogue Scale, and tape measure at baseline, fourth week and eighth week of treatment. Participants underwent treatment twice weekly for eight weeks. Measurements of outcomes were done at baseline, fourth week and eighth week of treatment. Descriptive statistic of mean, standard deviation and inferential statistics of Independent T-test, and Repeated measure ANOVA were used to analyse data using SPSS version 23. Alpha level was set at p˂0.05 of significance.
Results: A total of nineteen NSCLBP patients (Male:8, Female:11) with mean age of 23.39 ± 7.02, weight of 66.2 ± 6.80 , height of 1.76 ± 1.64 and BMI of 28.0 ± 1.46 participated and completed this study. The results showed that LOR had significant effects on pain intensity and range of motion as well as combination of both LOR and LSE. week 1 pain intensity (t= -0.709, P= 0.996), ROM FF (t= -1.258, P=0.998), ROM BB (t= 1.494, P= 0.427), ROM RF (t= -0.036, P=0.159), ROM LF (t= -1.709, P=0.377) , week 4 pain intensity (t= 0.490, P= 0.369), ROM FF(T= -1.103 P= 0.548), ROM BB (t= 1.631, P= 0.787), ROM RF (t= 0.286, P=0.494), ROM LF (t= -1.107, P=0.733) and week 8 pain intensity (T=0.131, P= 0.037) and ROMFF (T=-1.012, P= 0.566), ROM BB (t= 1.748, P= 0.069), ROM RF (t= 0.171, P=0.661), ROM LF (t= -1.043, P=0.924)
Conclusion: The outcome of this research showed that LOR is effective alone moreover, LOR with LSE was more effective in pain reduction and improvement of range of motion with non-specific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP).
