DETERMINATION OF THE NUTRITIONAL CONTENT OF THE FORMULATED COMPLEMENTARY DIETS FOR CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF FIVE
Abstract
Infancy is a period of rapid physical growth as well as physiological, immunological and mental Development when nutritional requirements are at their highest. This Study evaluated the nutritional composition of the formulated complementary foods from Soyabeans, Millet, Sorghum, Maize and Groundnut composite blend in a different ratio 35:35:30, 50:25:25, 50:25:25 Samples A, B and C respectively. The Proximate and mineral contents were analyzed using standard methods. The moisture content ranged from 8.42±0.05 to 8.95±0.04%, Ash 2.31 ± 0.09 to 3.37 ± 0.02%, fat 3.34 ±0.07 to 22.13 ±0.06%, fibre 6.24±0.04 to8.05 ±0.06%, protein 10.35±0.04 to 22.90±0.06%, and carbohydrate 35.84 ±0.07 to 68.71±0.09%. The results of the three complementary Formulations showed that carbohydrate was highest in sample B while sample A has the highest protein content. The mineral content was seen to be highest in sample B for both Iron and zinc. The formulated foods were nutritionally sound since they could provide reasonable percentage of recommended daily allowance for protein, carbohydrate and some macro/micronutrients.
