ASSESSMENT OF YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN POLITICS AMONG OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, ILE-IFE, OSUN STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT
This study assessed youth participation in politics among students of Obafemi Awolowo
University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. The research investigated the level of
political examine students' perceptions of youth involvement in politics.
The study employed a descriptive survey design, with data collected using a structured
questionnaire titled "Assessment of Youth Political Participation in OAU, (AYPPO)"
which was administered to members of the Great Ife Students' Union, including both the
Executive and Parliamentary Councils. The sample consisted of 108 students,
representing the active political participants within the university.
The results revealed that most students were highly engaged in political activities such as
voting, organising campaigns, and attending political events. Factors driving this
participation included peer influence, personal growth, and the benefits of political
involvement. On the other hand, apathy was linked to academic stress, fear of corruption,
and the perception that politics offers no future benefit. The majority of students believed
that youth participation in politics could bring positive change, improve democracy, and
foster leadership skills.
The study concludes that OAU students are generally politically active and perceive
youth involvement as an avenue for societal improvement.
