ANTIMICROBIAL SUSCEPTIBILITY OF CLINICAL MICROORGANISMS ISOLATED FROM WOUND INFECTION TO AQUEOUS AGAVE AMERICANA PLANT
Abstract
The result shows that the physical properties of the ethanolic extract of Agave americana which include the colour and weight of the powdered leaves and weight of the extract recovered were observed as seen in (Table 4.1). 100g of the powdered sample was used for the extraction and the weight of the extract recovered was found to be 4g. The color of the extract recovered was dark green and the texture was a fine solid. The result of the physical observation of the extract is slightly different with that of Ved et al., 2007, where he obtained 20g as weight of the extract recovered. The difference observed may be attributed to the weight of the powdered sample used for the extraction (Ved et al., 2007). The preliminary phytochemical analysis in (Table 4.2) showed that the Agave americana plant contains tannins, saponins, alkaloids and flavonoids. These compounds have been found to inhibit bacterial growth and are capable of protecting certain plant against bacterial infections. (Table 4.4). The zone of inhibition were 15 at 100% concentration, 20 at 75% concentration, 22 at 50% concentration and 10 at 25% concentration. At concentration of 50% staph had the highest zone of inhibition Table 4.3. The zone of inhibition were 20 at 100% concentration, 18 at 75% concentration, 14 at 50% concentration and 10 at 25% concentration. At concentration of 100% salmonella had the highest zone of inhibition.
