Abstract

This study compared the effect of cycloplegia on static retinoscopy and autorefractometry in young adults. Fifty students aged 18 to 30 years from Abia State University, Uturu, were examined. Objective refraction was carried out using a streak retinoscope and a KR-9000 autorefractometer before and after instillation of 1% tropicamide. The results showed a slight variation in readings under cycloplegic and non-cycloplegic conditions. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25, and a paired sample t-test revealed a significant difference (p < 0.05). The findings indicate that both methods are effective starting points for subjective refraction, although cycloplegia alters the refraction values slightly.
