Abstract

One remarkable feature of online newspapers is the major adverts which dot the home pages. Advertising is a mass communication tool, which is essentially paid by a firm or an individual and the ultimate purpose of which is to give information, develop attitudes and induce action, which are useful to the advertiser. The study examines the linguistic analysis of selected products and services of online Nigerian newspaper advertisements using Linguistic models of Crystal and Davy (1969, 1997) and Leech and Short (1981). Results of the analysed data show that the nouns used were abstract, concrete and proper nouns. The adjectives used in the corpus were adjectives of number/quantity, proper adjectives and descriptive adjectives. An investigation of the corpus found that the product and service adverts used transitive and intransitive verbs. The import of this is to enhance descriptive specificity of the advertised product or service.
