SOCIO-ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT IN ADAMAWA NORTHERN SENATORIAL DISTRICT.

Over the past year, Nigeria has been battling with the problem of unemployment among the youth. This research investigated the socio-economic effect of youth unemployment in Adamawa State Northern Senatorial District as a case study. The broad objective of the study is to find out the socio-economic effects of youth unemployment on national development in Adamawa State Northern Senatorial District. The study used primary sources; data were collected through the use of structured questionnaires using Kobo Collect Kids. Four hundred questionnaires (400) were distributed to five (5) local government areas: Madagali (97), Michika (91), Mubi South (76), Mubi North (89), and Maiha (65), respectively. Out of the total questionnaires designed, all the respondents were captured successfully because of the effectiveness of the application. The study employed descriptive statistics, crosstabulation, and chi-square. The results obtained reveal that, the unemployment challenges in a study area include: skill training gap, limited opportunities and insufficient government support. The key factors influencing youth unemployment are: job availability, government initiatives, education quality, and private sector roles. Government programs in promoting vocational training, small and medium enterprises, private sector partnerships and employment services are effective in reducing unemployment rate. Also NGO in Adamawa northern senatorial district effectively combat youth unemployment through programs in job training, mentorship and entrepreneurship support. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made: it is essential to update educational curricula to align with current job market demands, incorporating practical skills and entrepreneurship. This involves forging partnerships between educational institutions and industries to provide relevant training, including internships and apprenticeships. Regular analysis of youth unemployment data will help identify trends and target interventions effectively in highunemployment areas and growing industries. Programs should be designed to support diverse socio-economic backgrounds with targeted scholarships, financial aid, and mentorship, while engaging local communities to tailor solutions. Additionally, promoting local entrepreneurship, ensuring proper funding and oversight for job creation programs, and fostering collaboration between government, businesses, and NGOs will strengthen efforts and maximize impact.
