THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT FERTILIZER APPLICATION ON SEED GERMINATION AND GROWTH OF KHAYA SENEGALENSES

This study investigates the effects of various fertilizers on the seed germination and
early growth of Khaya senegalensis (African mahogany), a valuable tropical tree
species. Fertilizers applied include organic sources such as cow dung, goat
droppings, sheep droppings, and chicken droppings, as well as inorganic NPK
fertilizer. The experimental design involved a randomized complete block setup,
with controlled application rates and regular data collection on germination rates,
shoot height, number of leaves, and stem weight. Results indicated that NPK
fertilizer produced the highest growth metrics, including a maximum shoot height
of 62 cm, followed by chicken droppings at 59 cm. Goat droppings were the least
effective. The study concludes that while inorganic fertilizers like NPK yield rapid
and significant growth, combining organic and inorganic fertilizers could enhance
soil health and sustainable forestry practices. Recommendations include precise
fertilizer application, regular soil testing, and further research under different
environmental conditions.
