THE CAUSES AND THE IMPACT OF RURAL-URBAN MIGRATION IN NIGERIA: A STUDY OF NUMAN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
This research investigates the causes and impacts of rural-urban migration in Numan Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study identifies economic hardship, unemployment, lack of social amenities, and educational opportunities as primary drivers of migration. Findings reveal significant negative effects on rural areas, including labor shortages and reduced agricultural productivity, while urban areas face overcrowding, unemployment, and strained infrastructure. The study recommends integrated rural development, improved social services, and agricultural support to mitigate migration and promote balanced regional growth.
