PREVALENCE OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION AMONG STUDENTS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTION, MAIDUGURI METROPOLITAN COUNCIL, BORNO STATE.

ABSTRACT The prevalence of alcohol consumption among students in tertiary institutions is a significant public health issue, with potential consequences for both academic performance and student well-being. This study investigates the extent and patterns of alcohol use among university students, exploring factors such as age, gender, social influences, academic stress, and peer pressure. A cross-sectional survey with questionnaire was conducted at the university of Maiduguri metropolitan, borno state. Collecting data on alcohol consumption frequency, quantity, and associated behaviors. The results indicated a high prevalence of alcohol use, with a substantial proportion of students engaging in binge drinking, particularly among males. Socializing, stress relief, and peer influence were identified as primary drivers of alcohol consumption. The gender equality 132 (89%) represent male while 18 (11%) of the respondent representing female which it indicate that majority of the respondent were male. the 28 (14%) respondent were within the age of 20 - 25 years. 54 (38%) respondent within the age of 26 - 30 years and 68(48%) respondent within the age of 30 and above. this shows that the majority of the respondent are within the age of 30 years and above. the level of education 31(15.5%) of the respondents attained primary education while 48(32.5%) of the respondent attained secondary education and 71 (52%) of the respondent was attained tertiary education. The majority of the respondent are those that attained tertiary education. The research findings suggest that alcohol consumption was notably higher among students in higher education compared to those at the primary level, and also higher among individuals who were divorced in terms of marital status. This study emphasizes the importance of addressing alcohol use within the context of student life and the role of educational institutions in fostering healthier environments.
