THE EFFECTS OF ARMED BANDITRY ON THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY OF KONTAGORA LOCAL GOVERNMENT, NIGER STATE
Abstract
The study examines the effects of armed banditry on the socio-economic development of Nigeria, with particular reference to Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger State. The research investigates the root causes, patterns, and consequences of banditry in the region, emphasizing its implications for economic activities, education, agriculture, and social stability. Using a qualitative research approach, data were collected from both primary and secondary sources including interviews, journals, newspapers, and government reports. The findings reveal that armed banditry has significantly hindered economic growth by disrupting agricultural productivity, reducing investment, and creating large-scale displacement of people. Socially, it has led to loss of lives, closure of schools, food insecurity, and heightened poverty levels. The study concludes that unless decisive measures are taken—such as strengthening security architecture, addressing youth unemployment, promoting community engagement, and tightening border control—the menace of armed banditry will continue to threaten peace and development in Niger State and Nigeria at large
