THE CAUSES, EFFECT AND SOLUTION TO ELECTION VIOLENCE IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF MAIDUGURI METROPOLITAN COUNCIL, BORNO STATE)

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to examine the causes, effect and solution to election violence in Nigeria (A case study of MMC, Borno State). It was guided by three objectives, to: examine the Causes election violence in Maiduguri, examine the effect of election violence in Maiduguri, determine the solution to election violence in Maiduguri. A sample of one hundred and fifty two (152) respondents from residence in Bolori, Hausari, Abbaganaram abd Ngomari was taken for the research work. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire designed by the researcher. The instrument passed through face validity. The collected Data were analysed using simple frequency table and interpretation were made. Results show that there is numerous causes of election violence which include; poverty and unemployment, weak government and corruption. Also the effect could bring about loss of life and properties, electoral fraud, social tension e.t.c One of the recommendations is the government should work towards job creation and economic growth in other to reduce electoral violence and also there should be judicial and educational reforms in other to reduce election violence.
