Abstract

Grains, particularly cereals and legumes like sorghum, form a crucial component of the global food supply, especially in resource-poor regions. These crops provide essential calories and proteins and play a pivotal role in supporting livelihoods and local economies in developing nations. In tropical and subtropical regions, where food grains are staple diets, traditional storage methods are widely practiced to prevent post-harvest losses and ensure food security. This literature review explores various indigenous grain storage techniques used in Nigeria and India, focusing on both their cultural relevance and practical effectiveness in maintaining grain quality. Among the methods discussed are the use of metal and plastic drums, earthen bins, storage bags, mud houses, and the incorporation of cow dung for pest control. These practices, often tailored to local environmental conditions and cultural preferences, aim to safeguard grains from moisture, pests, and microorganisms. While effective, these methods are not without challenges, such as the need for airtight seals in metal drums to prevent insect activity. The review highlights the importance of understanding these traditional storage methods, as they provide valuable insights for enhancing food security in rural areas. Additionally, the review advocates for integrating modern scientific knowledge with indigenous practices to improve storage systems while minimizing environmental impact.
