IMPACT OF TERRORISM AND INSECURITY ON NIGERIA’S FOREIGN POLICY; THE MUHAMMED BUHARI ADMINISTRATION IN FOCUS” (2015-2020)

ABSTRACT Terrorism has been a major issue facing Nigeria in recent times in terms of how it affects the nation’s relations with other countries in the international arena. It should be noted that not much scholarly work has been done on how terrorism affects Nigeria’s foreign policy, in this regard; this project shall address some problems encountered. The research is aimed at examining the historical antecedent of terrorism and insecurity on Nigeria foreign policy. The paper explores the issues of foreign policy and its challenges arising from lack of security management. This is because Nigeria as a nation has a problem of insecurity. In trying to achieve the purpose of the study, the paper anchored on the theory of relative deprivation and poverty theory as a perceived discrepancy between man’s (group) value expectation and value capabilities conditions of life, which people believe they are rightfully entitled to while value capability are the goals and conditions they think they are capable of obtaining and maintaining given the social means available to them. The paper revealed that the contending issues and challenges of terrorism and insecurity could be in form of mismatch between foreign policy and the functions of the various tiers of government. This study adopted the descriptive survey which is concern with the truth of investigation of the contemporary issued and event concerning terrorism and insecurity. For the purpose of this study, a sample size of two hundred (200) respondents was selected from professionals in the field of federal secretariat Ilorin (Immigration Dept). From which 180 responds returned the questionnaire distributed through purposive sampling technique. Data was analysed using statically package for social science (SPSS) and was presented using frequency table. The paper concluded and recommended that the increased in terrorist violence caused by the various terrorist groups in recent times is enormous and is a great challenge to security, peace, unity, development of the country and Nigeria’s foreign policy. Besides terrorism instilling constant fears, and destruction of lives and properties, it has threatened the fragile foundation of Nigeria’s Foreign Policy formulation.
