Abstract

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants posing significant environmental and health risks due to their resistance to degradation and bioaccumulalion. This study investigates the microbial degradation of PCBs in polluted soils of Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria, by identifying and characterizing PCB-tolerant bacteria. Soil samples from three distinctsites (transformer, mechanical workshop, and electronic waste) were analyzed. Laboratory methods included serial dilutions, bacterial culture on nutrient and mineral salt agar, biochemical testing, and colony counting. Results revealed that Bacillus spp., Pseudomonas spp., and Staphylococcus spp. were the predominant bacterial isolates, with significant tolerance to PCB contamination. Transformer and electronic waste sites exhibited higher microbial activity and diversity, underscoring their potential for bioremediation. Biochemical tests validated the isolates' adaptability and metabolic capabilities in degrading PCBs and hydrocarbons. The study concludes that indigenous bacteria such as Bacillus and Pseudomonas spp. are promising candidates for PCB bioremediation. Recommendations include advanced molecular characterization, optimization of degradation conditions, and employing indigenous bacterial strains for in situ remediation of PCB-contaminated soils. These findings provide a sustainable approach to mitigating PCB pollution and safeguarding public health in affected regions.
