EFFECT OF INSECURITY ON SOCIOECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN BORNO STATE

This study examines the effect of insecurity on socioeconomic development in Borno State, with particular focus on Maiduguri Metropolitan Council. Over the past decade, the activities of the Boko Haram insurgency have posed significant threats to lives, property, and economic stability in the state, thereby undermining development efforts. The persistent attacks on markets, schools, religious centres, government institutions, and businesses have disrupted economic activities, increased unemployment, displaced populations, and weakened social cohesion. Against this background, the study investigates the extent to which insecurity has affected economic growth, investment, social services, and general living standards in the study area. The research adopts a survey research design using both primary and secondary data sources. Questionnaires and interviews were employed to collect data from residents, traders, and public servants, while relevant literature, reports, and official documents provided supporting evidence. The study is anchored on the Frustration-Aggression Theory to explain how deprivation, unemployment, poor governance, and lack of education contribute to violent conflicts and insecurity. Findings reveal that insecurity has negatively impacted business activities, reduced local and foreign investment, increased poverty and unemployment, destroyed infrastructure, and hindered effective service delivery in education and health sectors. The study further establishes a significant relationship between insecurity and poor socioeconomic development in Maiduguri. It concludes that without sustainable peace and effective security measures, meaningful development in Borno State will remain unattainable.The study recommends improved security strategies, youth employment programmes, good governance, educational development, and community participation as essential measures for restoring stability and promoting socioeconomic development in the state.
