WATER QUALITY MONITORING IN A CLAY POT I

Abstract

Water sample obtained from Hyklass hotel girls school road, Ekpoma, Edo State was stored in a clay pot for 12 days to determine the water quality parameters using standard methods. The pH, conductivity, TDS, TS, BOD, Cl- , Na+ , Ca2+ and Fe3+ of the control was 5.8, 52µS/cm, 26mg/l, 0.062mg/l, 0.33mg/l, 19.99mg/l, 0.053mg/l, 6.41mg/l and 29.33mg/l respectively. The value of pH, conductivity, TDS, TS, BOD, Cl- , Na+ , Ca2+ and Fe3+ of water stored for 4 days are 7.4, 68µS/cm, 36mg/l, 0.002mg/l, 6mg/l, 10.00mg/l, 0.037mg/l, 4.01mg/l and 17.33 respectively. pH value, conductivity, TDS, TS, BOD, Cl- , Na+ , Ca2+ and Fe3+ of water stored for 8 days was found to be 7.8, 80µS/cm, 40mg/l, 0.0029mg/l, 4.67mg/l, 5.00mg/l, 0.031mg/l, 12.02mg/l and 18.67mg/l respectively. The pH value, conductivity, TDS, TS, BOD, Cl- , Na+ , Ca2+ and Fe3+ of water stored for 12 days was 7.9, 158µS/cm, 52mg/l, 0.0743mg/l, 3.38mg/l, 5.00mg/l, 0.031mg/l, 8.82mg/l, and 13.00mg/l respectively. The study proved that storage of water over a period of time with clay pot with mild treatment for bacteriological elimination would present a better quality of water for drinking.
