ASSESSMENT OF PATIENT'S SATISFACTION WITH OBSTETRIC ULTRASOUND IN ABUBAKAR TAFAWA/BALEWA UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL BAUCHI (ATBUTH)

ABSTRACT Title: An assessment of patient satisfaction with obstetric ultrasound service in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi state, Nigeria. Aim: To determine the patient's level of satisfaction with obstetric ultrasound services in ATBUTH in order to improve patient care. Methodology: Two hundred and twenty five (225) consented pregnant women participated in this study, their age ranges from 15-50 years with the mean age of 27 years and a self completion: (10) itemed structured questionnaire containing three sections (A, B and C) was used for data collection. The data was analyzed using statistical package for social sciences version 16.0, using frequencies and percentages. Result: Measuring the comfortablity of the patient waiting area 70.7% (n=159) were comfortable with the waiting area, 22.7% (n=51) were partially comfortable while 6.7% (n=1) were not comfortable with the area and measuring the frequency and percentage distribution on rating of waiting time 38.2% (n=86) of the patient rated the waiting time poor,43.6% (n=98) rated it good,13.3% (n=30) rated it very good while 4.9% (n=11) rated the pregnant consultation waiting time excellent while measuring the satisfaction of the patient with the amount of information the receive 4.9% (n=11) of the patients were not satisfied with the amount of information they received from the sonographer,15.1% (n=34) were partially satisfied while 80.0% (n=180) were satisfied. Measuring the satisfaction with the over-all services rendered to the patients from arrival to consultation shows 10.2% (n=23) were not satisfied, 22.2% (n=50) were patially satisfied while 65.5% (n=152) were satisfied with the overall services rendered to them in sonography unit in ATBUTH Bauchi. Conclusion: Majority of the obstetric patients coming for obstetric ultrasound scan are satisfied with the services they obtained that's (65.5%) of the consented pregnant women that participated in this study. The majority of the consented pregnant woman that (80.0%) of the study showed a high rate of satisfaction most especially with the information they received from the radiographers and services they received on their arrival to the department However, there is need for the radiology department to optimize the friendliness between the sonographers and their patient as well as the patient waiting time as they are the main issues patients complained about.
