LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTONOMY IN NIGERIA AND ITS IMPLICATION FOR THE FEDERAL STRUCTURE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examined the impact of Local Government Autonomy in Nigeria and its implication for the Federal structure. The study was guided by three research objectives and three research questions. Data were collected through administration ofquestionnaire where options were provided for the respondents to choose the appropriate option that suit their opinions. 200 questionnaires made up of15 items. Descriptive analysis was used to analyse the data collected and the data were presented in tabular form. The study revealed that.local government autonomy in Federal structure is important for effective governance, development ofthe regions. promotion ofbalance resources and it enhance accountability and responsiveness. The findings showed that Local government autonomy play a significant role in increasing revenue generation. establishing and managing sources of revenue. The results indicated that bureaucratic obstacles. political interference.financial constraints, resistance from higher levels and capacity limitations pose significant impediments to effective implementation oflocal government autonomy in the states. It was recommended that. There is a need to Streamline bureaucracy, curb interference. fostering an enabling environment for effective local government autonomy:Government should reallocate funds, explore financing mechanisms, ensuring local governments have resources for development initiatives.
