DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF 2KVA SOLAR POWERED UNINTERRUPTED POWER SUPPLY (UPS)
Abstract
You know how every time the power goes out, the entire neighborhood is filled with the noise of generators? I wanted to build something better—something quiet, clean, and run on the one resource we have plenty of: the sun. For my final year project, I built and designed a whole solar-powered backup system that would give power for the hours-long Nigerian power outages. I incorporated solar panels, a smart solar charger, batteries, and an inverter that I designed and built myself to deliver truly clean, safe power. After I'd tried it out, I'm happy to say that it performs even better than I'd anticipated—it kicks in so seamlessly during a power outage that you won't even realize it, and it operates thriftily enough that solar power is now a real possibility here. I wasn't attempting to pass a test; I was attempting to show that we can develop, locally relevant solutions to our energy needs that don't need fuel or noise. This is a prototype, yet it is a step toward a quieter, cleaner, and more independent tomorrow.
