EFFECT OF PLAN SWIFT (COMPUTER AIDED APPLICATION) IN QUANTITY SURVEYING PROFESSION IN PLATEAU STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The construction industry in Nigeria is undergoing rapid transformation through the adoption of digital tools that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and productivity. Plan Swift, a computer-aided takeoff and estimating software, has emerged as a vital innovation in quantity surveying, particularly in cost estimation and project management. However, despite its global acceptance, its adoption and utilization among quantity surveyors in Plateau State remain limited due to challenges such as high software costs, inadequate training, infrastructural constraints, and resistance to change. This study aims to assess the adoption of Plan Swift in the quantity surveying profession in Plateau State. The objectives are to: determine the adoption level and functions of Plan Swift among quantity surveyors in Plateau State, identify the challenges affecting its effective use, and explore its influence on the performance of quantity surveying firms. This study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The descriptive survey gathered perceptions on the software's impact on efficiency, accuracy, and productivity. The Finding reveal that awareness of Plan Swift is very high (98.6%), with significant usage (91.4%) across diverse organizations, including construction firms, consulting practices, academic institutions, and government agencies. The software is predominantly applied for quantity take-offs and cost estimation, while its advanced features such as resource management and project planning remain underutilized. Key challenges include high acquisition costs, lack of adequate training, infrastructural limitations, and behavioral resistance. Despite these barriers, the software has been shown to improve efficiency, accuracy, and competitiveness, with a majority of respondents affirming its positive impact on professional practice. The study concludes that while Plan Swift holds great potential to revolutionize quantity surveying in Plateau State, addressing financial, infrastructural, and skill-related challenges is crucial for its full-scale adoption and integration into practice
