Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to determine physiological and biochemical changes induced by MWMV in C. moschata. Results of the study show that MWMV caused considerable changes in the parameters investigated as systematic host of the virus. It was well expressed in the reduction in the phytochemcial contents of saponins, alkaloids, terpenoids, reducing sugars and steroids. Reductions engendered by WMinfection are in agreement with previous reports by El-Dougdoug et al. (2007), Duarte et al. (2008) and Mofunanya and Nt a (2011). Moroccan Watermelon Mosaic Virus (MWMV) is a severe threat to melon production worldwide. At present, there are no cultivars available on the market which show an effective resistance or tolerance to Moroccan Watermelon Mosaic Virus (MWMV) infection; only wild Cucumis species were reported as resistant were mechanically infected with isolates belonging to the European and Asian strain of CMMV and screened for resistance by scoring symptom severity and comparing the accumulation of virus by qRT-PCR. The wild species C. anguria and C. ficifolius showed no symptoms and did not accumulate CMV following inoculation, while C. metuliferus was highly susceptible to the isolates of both strains of MWMV.
