ABSTRACT
Although researchers have examined the causes and effects of drug abuse among youth in Nigeria, there is still much need for research on the impact of the negative effect of drug abuse among youth within Damaturu Metropolitan Area. This qualitative study was to examine and analyzes the effects of such drug abuse within the study area. The study’s theoretical framework was based on a comparative analysis which led to counter drug strategies in the control of drug abuse among youth generally. Data for this study were primarily collected through face-to-face interviews with a purposeful sample of some participants who were exposed to the reality of drug abuse in Damaturu Metropolitan Area. A focus group discussion and document review were also conducted. Content analysis of collected data yielded possible solutions to drug abuse among youth in various forms: counselling and awareness being the cheapest and most effective. Implications for positive social changes in the study area and community at large are highly recommended.
