Abstract

This research investigated the efficacy of garlic (Allium sativum) bulb extract as a biopesticide for the control of Cercospora leaf spot disease of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) in Maiduguri. Groundnut is an economically important oilseed crop whose productivity is severely constrained by fungal diseases, particularly leaf spot caused by Cercospora species. The study aimed at evaluating disease incidence and severity, isolating and identifying the causal pathogens, determining the chemical constituents of garlic bulb extract, and assessing its effectiveness in disease control. Experimental trials were conducted using potted groundnut plants under controlled conditions. Data collected were analyzed using appropriate statistical tools. Results indicated that garlic bulb extract significantly reduced disease incidence and severity, demonstrating its potential as an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to synthetic fungicides. The study recommends the integration of garlic extract into sustainable disease management strategies for groundnut production.
