Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated readers attitude towards the patronage of government owned newspapers using pointer newspaper as case study. The study adopted the survey research method with questionnaire as its main instrument. Three hundred and eighty two respondent from the sample size. The study was anchored on the uses and gratification theory. Findings of the study show that the attitude of reads toward government owned newspaper affect its patronage. If the attitude is positive the patronage of the newspapers will be high and if the attitude is negative the patronage will be low. The findings also show that more copies of government newspaper are sold when the published. Content is of public interest and during census period. Based on the findings and the conclusion reached, it was recommended amongst others that publishers of newspapers especially government owned should endeavour to publish contents that are more of public interest to enhance public patronage.
