THE ROLE OF LIBRARY ADMINISTRATION IN DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN RAMAT LIBRARY OF UNIVERSITY OF MAIDUGURI

ABSTRACT This study investigates the role of library administration in disaster preparedness and response in academic libraries, with a focus on the Ramat Library at the University of Maiduguri. Academic libraries, as critical centers for education and research, face significant risks from disasters, necessitating robust preparedness strategies. The study explores the practices, challenges, and responsibilities of library administrators in managing disaster risks, ensuring operational continuity, and safeguarding library resources. A survey research design was adopted, targeting library administrators and staff. Data collection involved structured questionnaires, analyzed through qualitative and quantitative methods to identify existing measures, gaps, and areas for improvement. Key findings reveal that while foundational measures such as emergency protocols and technology integration are in place, challenges persist in the form of inadequate staff training, limited resource allocation, and inconsistent collaboration with local emergency services. These findings underscore the critical role of library administrators in fostering a culture of resilience through effective planning, training, and stakeholder engagement. The study concludes that strengthening disaster preparedness in academic libraries requires comprehensive emergency plans, regular staff training, and enhanced collaboration with external agencies. Recommendations include establishing dedicated budgets for disaster preparedness, conducting regular simulation drills, and clarifying roles and responsibilities to ensure coordinated responses during crises. By addressing these gaps, academic libraries can enhance their resilience and maintain their vital role in supporting education and research. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on disaster management in academic institutions and highlights the need for tailored strategies to address the unique challenges faced by library administrations. Future studies should explore innovative approaches to leveraging technology and integrating community-based disaster management practices in academic settings.
