ASSESSMENT OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS IN TEACHING OF GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES IN SOME SELECTED SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN BOGORO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, BAUCHI STATE

The aim of this study is centered on the assessment of instructional materials in teaching of grammatical structures in some selected senior secondary schools in Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State. Three research objectives and three research questions were used for the research. The study adopted descriptive survey design. One hundred (100) respondents were randomly selected as the sample size for the research. Data obtained were analyze using simple percentage and frequency count. The findings revealed that majority of the teachers used instructional material for teaching grammatical structure before and after the teaching of structures, followed by those who used it after teaching the structure and some use it in the process of teaching grammatical structure, only few of the teachers used it before teaching the structures. Furthermore the study identifies that challenges faces by teachers in using instructional materials for teaching grammatical structure are; difficulties in getting appropriate instructional materials, difficulties in using instructional materials, poor knowledge of instructional materials use in teaching grammatical structures and inability to use appropriate instructional materials in different grammatical structures. Recommendations were given such as English language teachers should be encouraged to use instructional materials in order to facilitates learning of grammar and other English language concepts.
