ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE MEDIA IN THE MANAGEMENT OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN NIGERIA A STUDY OF ASABA, DELTA STATE
Abstract
This study examined the effectiveness of the media in the management of human rights in Nigeria, with particular focus on Asaba, Delta State. The media play a crucial role in promoting human rights awareness, exposing violations, and shaping public opinion. However, challenges such as censorship, ownership influence, and limited access to information often hinder their effectiveness. The study adopted a survey research design, using questionnaires as the main instrument for data collection. A sample of residents of Asaba was selected through simple random sampling. Data collected were analyzed using simple percentage method and descriptive analysis. Findings revealed that the media significantly contribute to human rights awareness and advocacy in Asaba, but their effectiveness is constrained by political interference, inadequate funding, and fear of repression. The study concluded that while the media remain a vital tool in human rights management, structural and professional improvements are necessary. Recommendations were made to enhance media independence, professionalism, and collaboration with human rights organizations.
