PREVALENCE OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE IN ESCHERICHIA COLI ISOLATED FROM FAECAL SAMPLES OF POULTRY BIRDS IN AKUNGBA-AKOKO
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The pathogenic Escherichia coli can be released with the wastes coming from poultry farm houses into the environment, where they can persist. The study investigated the presence of diarrhea genic Escherichia coli in poultry sample collected from Akoko- South West (Medolin, Permanent site, School farm, Ugbe, Eshe and Agbaluku). Microbiological methods were used, peptone water was used as enrichment medium and Eosine methylene blue (EMB) was used as a selective medium for Escherichia coli. Biochemical tests were used to confirm Escherichia coli isolate, and Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method was used to determine the antibacterial susceptibility pattern. The antibiotics profile of the isolates was interpreted using the recommendation of Clinical and Laboratory Standard institute for Enterobacteriaceae. The result showed that Escherichia coli isolate were resistant to Cefazolin, Amoxillin, Ciprofloxacin and Tetracycline. And also almost all the isolate were susceptible to Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, Cephalosporin and Penicillin. The antimicrobial resistant percentage, range from 83.3%, (Cefazolin) to 19% (Amoxillin) This difference might be due to sanitation and hygienic difference within the poultry farms. Escherichia coli particularly pathogenic strains have public importance which can be transmitted through consumption of raw meat. Therefore, poultry farmers should increase their sanitation and hygiene practices in order to prevent outbreak of infection.
