PERCEPTION OF DRUG USE AND ABUSE AMONG STUDENTS IN SOME SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOL MAIDUGURI METROPOLITAN COUNCIL, BORNO STATE

ABSTRACT The study examined perception of drug use and abuse among students in some selected secondary school Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State. The study comprised three (3) objectives and three (3) research questions. The literatures were viewed on Perception of Drug Use and Abuse among secondary school students, and causes of Drug Use and Abuse Effects of Drug Use and Abuse among secondary school students. The population of the study comprised of two hundred and ninety-two (292) students in some selected secondary Maiduguri Metropolitan Council. Proportionate sampling technique was utilized to select 5% of the respondents from each Secondary School, resulting in a population size of one hundred and fourty-seven (147). Result revealed that drug use negatively affects students' academic performance and curiosity and lack of guidance lead students to use drugs, more over drug use increases the likelihood of students engaging in risky behaviors The information was obtained which showed the responses from the respondents was analyzed in line with the research objectives using descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages scores. The scope of this study on perception of Drug use and Abuse among students in some selected secondary, the study further delimited to Maiduguri Metropolis, Borno State. Teachers: Schools should provide mandatory training sessions for teachers to equip them with knowledge and skills to educate students on the dangers of drug abuse. Parents: Parents should be encouraged to participate in school-organized workshops on drug abuse prevention and awareness. Students: Schools should create peer-led programs where students can learn from each other in a safe and relatable setting. Student ambassadors or peer educators can be trained to provide information and resources about the consequences of drug abuse.
