ABSTRACT
This work is done to examine the assessment of the impact of local government on rural development (a case study of Jere local Government Borno state). Local government in Nigeria is an important process of government with significant consequences for nation development. Itis about mobilization of human and material resources at the grass root level for societal progress and development. The research work discusses three specific objectives of the study are; examine the role of the local government in promoting infrastructure development in rural areas of jere local government, evaluate the local government effort in enhancing educational opportunities and facilities in rural school, and identify challenges faced by the local government in promoting rural development and suggest recommendations for improvement. Three research questions was utilized in the study. Survey method was used to collect primary data, questionnaire was distributed to the respondents to get the primary data. Base on the result obtained the findings of the result indicating that majority of the respondents are in agreement with the fact that the local government council aim is to bring development to rural areas. In conclusion, Jere local government has not been effective in the development of rural communities. The council has performed below expectation in the provision and maintenance of primary schools in the area. Based on the result obtained the studly recommended that; lack of seriousness on the part of the Jere local government revenue collection staff, dishonesty of revenue officials, inadequate vehicles and boats for revenue drive among other contribute to low internally generated revenue in the local government.
