IMPACT OF CORRECTIONAL SERVICES ON REHABILITATION AND REINTEGRATION PROGRAMMESIN NIGERIA: A STUDY OF ADO-EKITI CORRECTIONAL CENTER, EKITI STATE

ABSTRACT Globally, there have not been a con-census the rate of recidivism which depends on the penal system of every country of the world and other relative factors Although, recidivism is a global social problem Nigeria is not left out its impact on the society directly and indirectly. In Nigeria, the rate at which released inmates return into the prisons is about few months or years after release which have attracted the attention and interest of many scholars from several disciplines. Recidivism is has become a common phenomenon among inmates in the Nigerian prisons. Gender is not left out. These include both the male and female recidivists in the Nigerian prisons. Hence, it contributes to high crime rates which have resulted in loss of lives and properties thereby threatening peace, safety of lives and national security posing a threat to good governance in the country. The general objective of the study is to examine the Impact of Correctional Services on Rehabilitation and Reintegration Programmes in Nigeria: A Study of Ado-Ekiti Correctional Center, Ekiti State This study adopted the Social Control Theory to explain the problem under study. It was revealed that majority of the respondents reported that after inmate have been released a staff is often assigned to check up on them regularly, followed by those who reported that there is nothing of such after inmate have been released a staff is often assigned to check up on them regularly, it was also found out that majority of the respondents reported that there is adequate counselling of inmates and return offenders in this correctional centre while the least reported were those who reported that there is no adequate counselling of inmates and return offenders in this correctional centre. Based on the findings, of the study the Nigeria government has implemented effective correctional programs and policies for inmates to get accepted in a normal society which motivates them not to get involved in any kind of offense again. Federal government of Nigeria should promulgate a law to reduce social stigma on ex-prisoners and protect them. Constitutionally, ex-inmate should not be denied.
