SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR AMONG STUDENTS OF ADEKUNLE AJASIN UNIVERSITY
Abstract
The study was designed to investigate substance abuse and its relationship with criminal behavior among students of Adekunle Ajasin University. The sample of the study consisted of one hundred (100) undergraduate students randomly selected across six (6) faculties in Adekunle Ajasin University. The sample size for this study was proportionately distributed across the six major faculties in the university. The findings from the research indicate that substance abuse is a common issue among AAUA students and is closely linked with various forms of criminal behavior. The results also revealed that students involved in drug and alcohol use were more likely to engage in crimes such as theft, assault, and cult-related activities. Most respondents identified peer influence, academic pressure, and poor parental supervision as key factors driving substance abuse. Therefore, the study recommended the implementation of university-wide awareness campaigns and prevention programs to educate students on the harmful effects of substance abuse and its legal consequences. These interventions can be delivered through workshops, student counseling services, social media, and faculty-based seminars. When students are informed, they are better equipped to make healthier choices and avoid criminal behavior
