Abstract

ABSTRACT Antibacterial activities of Thymus vulgarisand Myristicafragrans seeds on some bacteria isolates was studied. Different concentrations (90%, 70%, and 50%) of the selected plant extract ofThymus vulgarisand Myristicafragrans seedswere prepared. The present study shows that the highest bacterial count was from wound swab A with 71 Cfu/cm3, followed by wound swab C with 52 Cfu/cm3, then wound swab B with 46 Cfu/cm3, then wound swab E with 31Cfu/cm3 and the least wound swab D with 22Cfu/cm3. The cultural, microscopic and biochemical characterization of the bacterial isolates revealed three (3) isolates such as: Staphylococus sp,Pseudomonas sp and Proteus sp. The highest prevalence was fromStaphylococcus spwith 35.5%; followed by Pseudomonas sp with 34.3% and the least was Proteus sp with 30.2% respectively. The effect of selected plant extract on the growth of the bacterial isolates revealed the plant extracts of Myristicafragrans seedsat 90%, 70% and 50% concentrations was observed to have a growth inhibition on Staphylococcus spas 11mm for 70% concentration for ethanolic extract and 11mm, 13mm, 9mm for aqueous extract.Pseudomonas sp had zones of inhibition of 10mm at 90% concentration for ethanolic extract and 9mm, 11mm, 10mm for aqueous extract. Proteus sp had zone of inhibitions of 11mm, 10mm at 90%, 70% concentration for ethanolic and 10mm, 10mm, 8mm for aqueous extracts. While the plant extracts of Thymus vulgaris seedsat 90%, 70% and 50% concentrations was observed to have a bacterial growth inhibition on Staphylococcus spas follows 13mm, 15mm, 12mm for ethanolic and 16mm, 14mm and 13mm for aqueous extracts, Pseudomonas sp had zones of inhibitions of 8mm at 50% concentration for ethanolic and 7mm, 9mm and 9mm for aqueous extracts.Proteus sp showed negligible response at all concentrations for ethanolic and 9mm, 8mm and 8mm for aqueous extracts respectively.
